“I am in the midst of lions; I am forced to dwell among ravenous beasts-- men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords.” Psalm 57:4 (NIV)

These are the words of David, as he fled to hide in a cave from King Saul’s jealous anger. David had struck and killed a lion that carried off a lamb from his flock, therefore, no one could have understood an encounter with a lion better than David. All of a sudden this brave warrior was in such great anguish that he felt his soul was in the midst of lions and fiery beasts. Saul and his men were for pursuing David in order to kill him for nothing wrong that he had done.

Daniel found himself in a similar situation in Daniel Chapter 6. Daniel distinguished himself with his exceptional qualities and matchless integrity, that those who worked with him plotted his downfall. As Daniel persevered in prayer, the evil schemes of men saw him end up in the lions’ den. However, no harm befell Daniel, for the Lord sent His angels to shut the mouth of those fierce and hungry lions. The outcome was that Daniel was elevated, God was exalted and His name revered throughout the kingdom.

There is another lion that all of us must watch out for. I Peter 5:8 cautions us, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (NLT) We must be watchful and prayerful, for our adversary the devil is constantly on the lurk looking for ways to destroy our faith.

All of us can identify with these situations where it seems like we are surrounded by lions. These attacks could be on our personal lives, our families, our ministries or on our growing relationship with the Lord. These assaults are subtle, and can come to us in many forms. The enemy will use the evil schemes of men or their vile words to discourage us in this journey of faith. That is why we are admonished in Ephesians 6:11, to “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”

Here’s the best part of it all. We have on our side our Lord Jesus who is the Lion of the Tribe of Judah. Guess what He’s done for us. We read in Revelations 5:5, "Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed.” (NIV) He is the Lamb of God who was slain for the sins of the whole world. He has triumphed over sin, sickness, death and the devil. Proverbs 28:1 says it this way, “The righteous are bold as a lion." (ESV)

Satan may roar at us, but when we walk in uprightness, the Lion of Judah will be on our side to defend us, fight for us and give us astounding victories.

Have a Triumphant Day
